This term in Pikanini One, we’ve slowly introduced a routine and structure to the room. Most of the children transitioning from Bambini’s room needed a little assistance and support to understand new skills and feel secure. They have learnt to sit at a table for meals, practice drinking from a cup, empty and place their plates on the kitchen bench, and take their water bottles to a trolley after mealtimes. This has been a big step in their cognitive and social-emotional development, but they are grasping these skills so quickly, and it’s amazing to see.
The children celebrated Chinese New Year with fireworks painting, paper lanterns, and Valentine’s Day by creating lovely cards with the Educators, including hand painting and photos for their parents and family members to take home.
We also learned about different animals in the ocean and on land. The children have explored sensory tubs with Jelly, oceans with sharks, fish and whales, swamps with crocodiles, rocks, plants, green squishy water, and under-the-sea environments with sand and seashells to splash about. Oh, what fun we’ve had developing our sensory skills and experiences.
The children also made lion and crocodile masks, a giant turtle shell, and lots of blowfish to hang on our room walls.
The children enjoyed a marvellous Harmony Day Family Picnic with their parents and families; we had balloon art making, decorating Chinese fans and umbrellas, a ball pit, and delicious cultural foods to enjoy. Seeing everyone coming together and celebrating as a community was a delight.
