BAKING DAMPER (1C)

After our excursion to Kings Park students were very intrigued to learn more about cooking damper.  Two days later the Year 1C students gathered excitedly around the firepit area, ready to make damper, a traditional Australian bread. The teachers prepared the space, ensuring it was safe and inviting with a crackling fire, fresh ingredients, and all the necessary utensils.

The children sat in a circle, their faces lit with anticipation and the warm glow of the fire. The teacher began by sharing a brief story about the history of damper, explaining how it was made by Indigenous Australians and early settlers using simple ingredients. The students listened with wide eyes, intrigued by this slice of Australian heritage.

As the damper cooked, the teacher talked about fire safety and the importance of respecting fire, making sure everyone understood how to stay safe. This lesson, woven seamlessly into the activity, highlighted the importance of responsible behaviour.

Finally, the damper was ready, the delicious smell making their mouths water. They were given a choice of honey and butter to spread on their damper, and the first bite brought delighted smiles and happy exclamations. The simple act of making damper had connected them with history, taught them valuable skills, and, most importantly, created a shared experience they would remember fondly.
