Our school’s cybersecurity program continues to evolve, with over 15 students actively participating in training for this year’s cybersecurity Capture the Flag competitions. Throughout Terms 2 and 3, a dedicated subset of these students trained, honing their skills in preparation for the national PECAN+ competition. We are grateful to Dave Lewis from the Australian Signals Directorate for his fantastic help during the year and for his training support.
PECAN+, a national Capture The Flag-style cybersecurity challenge for Australian high school students, tests participants’ problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and technical knowledge across various domains, including cryptography, reverse engineering, and exploitation.
We proudly sent two teams from this trained group to compete this year – one boys’ team and one girls’ team. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, performing admirably against competitors from across the country. While they didn’t take home the top prize, their achievements represent significant progress and valuable experience for our school’s cybersecurity program.
The experience gained at this national competition, led by Edith Cowan University’s School of Science, has been invaluable. Our competing students have returned with enhanced skills and renewed enthusiasm for cybersecurity.
Looking ahead, our broader cybersecurity group will continue to train and compete in another CTF challenge later this year. With their eyes set on next year’s PECAN+ competition, they’re determined to build on this year’s success and improve our school’s national ranking.
Congratulations to all our cybersecurity stars for their outstanding efforts and for representing our school with excellence!
