Enrichment & Extension in the Primary School

Our Primary Extension and Enrichment programs continue to offer students a wide range of opportunities to challenge themselves, collaborate with peers, and explore their passions across disciplines.

Mathematics Extension (Years 4–6)

Twelve teams of three students each participated in the MAWA Have Sum Fun Online competition this term. Congratulations to Samuel Nemec, Ethan Rawlings, and Micah Elkhuizen, who placed 3rd in the Year 5 category—a fantastic achievement!

ICAS Assessments (Years 4–6)

We proudly offered the full suite of ICAS assessments this term, with 55 students sitting approximately 100 tests across various subjects. These assessments provide valuable insights into student strengths and areas for growth.

IPSHA Speakers’ Challenge (Years 3–6)

Following Term 2 auditions, students competed in two age categories (Years 3/4 at Wesley College and Years 5/6 at St. Mary’s Anglican Girls). Special mention to Megan Cawood, who reached the Gold Round in the Year 3–4 division with her speech titled The Magic of Memories.

Young Writers’ Workshop (Year 6)

Each term, ten budding authors attend a workshop led by a published writer. This term, Chenée Marrapodi, a coming-of-age fiction author, inspired students to develop their narrative voice and creative expression. The group will also take part in an exciting in-school writing challenge this term.

Reading Extension (Year 5)

This group has been diving into fiction and texts, exploring literary elements and devices through rich discussion and critical thinking.

Numero Challenge (Years 4–6)

Two teams are currently preparing for the Numero Challenge, a strategic mathematics competition that sharpens mental computation and numerical fluency. The competition will take place in Term 4.

Science – Mini ROVs (Years 5 & 6)

Four teams are gearing up for the Garden Island ROV competition next term. Under the guidance of Daniel Rutherford, a Design & Tech Technician in Secondary, students have assembled and soldered their ROV control panels. Display project boards are nearing completion. Secondary students who competed last year have been assisting the current group with this phase of the project together with helping students know what to expect from the judges. Interactives and a formal PowerPoint presentation are tasks that need completing during the Spring break. Next term, we’ll begin to practice manoeuvring our ROV underwater in preparation for 7 underwater tests. The competition in Week 5 of Term 4 is hosted on Garden Island.

Bible Enrichment (Year 5)

Under a brilliant blue sky, our Bible Enrichment group set off on the Stacey’s Loop trail in Jarrahdale. After crossing the peaceful Gooralong Brook, we paused at a rocky outcrop for recess, river exploration, and a round of prayer. Our discussion on Heaven continued, with students reflecting deeply on the idea of eternal life. The next leg of the trail was walked individually, symbolising each student’s personal walk with God. We regrouped for lunch in Jarrahdale and enjoyed some time at the Bistro By The Dam playground. On the way home, we listened to an extract from The Case for Heaven for Young Readers by Lee Strobel — a powerful end to a meaningful day.

IPSHA Academic Challenge (Years 4–6)

Two teams represented our school at Methodist Ladies’ College, competing in a rigorous academic challenge covering Geography, Maths, Logic, Spelling, and General Knowledge. Among a strong field of 26 teams from 13 schools, our students demonstrated confidence, collaboration, and critical thinking throughout the event. Daniel Cheng in Year 6 and Rubee Veurink were part of a group that achieved 4th place.
