Year 5 Excursion to Perth Mint

In Week 9 of Term 3, the Year 5 students enjoyed an enriching excursion to the historic Perth Mint. The visit began with an engaging presentation on the early gold discoveries in Western Australia, giving students insight into the state’s rich mining heritage and its impact on settlement and economic development.

A highlight of the day was viewing the world’s largest gold coin, weighing an astonishing 1000 kilograms of solid gold. Students were amazed by its sheer size and value. They then witnessed a live gold pour, observing molten gold being transformed into a solid bar—a fascinating demonstration of the minting process.

To conclude the experience, each student had the opportunity to stamp their own commemorative coin to take home, creating a memorable keepsake from the day.

This excursion directly supports the Year 5 History curriculum, which explores the development of colonial Australia and the role of significant events—such as the gold rush—in shaping the nation’s identity and growth.
