On 12 June, our Year 9 and 10 students had the exciting opportunity to attend WAAPA’s production of Romeo and Juliet at the Heath Ledger Theatre. This excursion offered students a valuable chance to experience live theatre in a professional setting and to see Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy brought to life by emerging performers.
From the moment we arrived, students were immersed in the atmosphere of the theatre, gaining insight into the etiquette and energy of a live performance space. Watching the production unfold on stage provided a powerful reminder of how different theatre is from studying a text in the classroom. The students were able to engage with the story in a dynamic way, witnessing the emotion, tension, and humour of Shakespeare’s work expressed through voice, movement, and design.
A highlight of the experience was seeing WAAPA students perform at such a high standard. Their skill, commitment, and creativity were inspiring, giving our students a clear sense of what is possible through dedication to the performing arts. It also offered a meaningful connection point, as many could imagine themselves pursuing similar pathways in the future.
Beyond its educational value, the excursion was also a great deal of fun. Sharing the experience with peers, travelling together, and enjoying a live performance created a memorable evening for all involved. The combination of learning and enjoyment made it a truly worthwhile experience.
We thank WAAPA for an engaging and thought-provoking production, and we look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for our students to experience the richness of live theatre.
