YEAR 8

Term 3 has been action packed with activities across the school. Week 1 kicked off with the Inter-house Athletics Carnival, which, for the first time, was held at Hourglass Reserve in Cooloongup. The event was a great success with the Year 8s really giving it their best. A huge congratulation to the Champion Boy for Year 8, Tyler Nyabinde, and the Champion Girl, Khadijah Nazir. It was an extra successful day for my House, Widi (penguin), as they walked away with the win that day.

In Week 8 this Term our Football Academy Junior Boys (Year 7s and 8s) Team won the School Sport WA State Championship. The victory came against Ashdale SHS with a dominant 3 – 1 score line. Our students represented the College well and played exceptional given the pressure of a final. A big thanks to Chris Thackray, Head Coach, for all his work and effort with the team throughout the year.

With all this talk of physical activity, I am reminded of the verse from the book of Timothy in the bible.

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8

Here at South Coast Baptist College, we believe in preparing well for sporting events and looking after our bodies. We do this through our physical education, health and sporting programmes. However, we also understand the importance of developing the whole person which includes our desire for academic excellence, great character and a robust faith.  Jesus is the most influential person who ever lived, but He also is one of the most mis-understood figures in history. This Term in BCS, students have been slowly reading the Gospel of John; an account from one of Jesus followers about his life and ministry while on earth. Students have been investigating Jesus’ teaching and the big claims He has made. Part of our student’s development in both character and mental health includes our GEM programme where we focus on Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. This Term students looked at different cultural traditions and customs as well as looking at how to combat negative bias and negative self-talk.

In Week 9 this Term, students were invited to a Year 8 social event; pizza, soft drink and laser tag. Social events such as this are offered to all Year 8 students as a means for creating fun memories and opportunities to develop relationships between students and their peers and their teachers. The event was well supported and those who attended had a blast. A big mention needs to go to Ivan Firsov, who was unstoppable!

I hope you and your family have enjoyed this term. I am looking forward to Term 4; spring is here and summer is Coming!
