BRITISH PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING

On Friday the 2nd of September, Jannah Teo and Shaylah Ryan-Sherriff travelled to Mandurah Baptist College to compete in the regional British Parliamentary Debating competition.

BP Debating, as it is commonly referred to, is a style of debating that borrows from the British Parliamentary system. Four teams of two students participate in each round, arguing timely topics such as “The Government moves that Australia should boycott sporting events against countries with poor human rights records.” Teams are judged according to three main criteria: Matter (the substance of their arguments and the logic they employ), Manner (the skill with which they deliver their arguments), and Method (the extent to which they conform to the conventions of BP debating).

Jannah and Shaylah did exceptionally well in the competition, winning all three debates in which they participated. The competition was adjudicated by the Western Australian Debating League and scores for the debates will be compared with those of schools who participated in the Bunbury round to determine which teams will make it through to the next stage of the competition.
