ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE

On Thursday, 2nd May, Secondary was privileged to hold a service to commemorate ANZAC Day.   Commander Gavin Reeves from the HMAS STIRLING Navy base was the guest of honour and spoke about the history of the Royal Australian Navy involvement in the Gallipoli campaign, and how the Navy’s values have shaped his personal outlook on life.   The Secondary Prefects, supported by Mr Scott, told the story of the 11th Battalion, which was raised in Western Australia as one of the first fighting units of the Australian Imperial Force.   Sadly, 69 men from the Battalion were killed on the first day of the landings at Gallipoli, and the Prefects read out the names and ages of these men in honour of their sacrifice.

The accompanying picture shows the Battalion in front of the Cheops Pyramid, taken during a break in their training prior to deployment.
