FOOTBALL 2019 CHAMPIONS!

SCBC v Butler College

The day had come, the first time that South Coast Baptist College had reached the Senior Boys Grand Final and the team was ready to go out there and perform. This was to be the last game for several Year 12 students, the last time they would put on the SCBC shirt. It was a big day for our college.

The game was against Butler College who were champions of the Northern regions, this was set to be a very competitive match with two teams going at it to be crowned the State Champions. The game was to be played at Dalmatinac Park, a fantastic venue offered up by Cockburn City SC. The Kick off was 6:00 pm so the game was going to be played under lights which would only add to the atmosphere.

The game started at a frantic pace with SCBC looking to dominate possession and Butler looking to squeeze and press and make it difficult. Players looked nervous and this led to a very scrappy opening to the game. This was to continue for the majority of the first half and SCBC needed to pick up the quality overall. The effort was excellent however and this led to SCBC controlling most of the play. Butler College provided a threat constantly on the break and from set-pieces with some tall timber. As the half continued SCBC was able to create space on the edge of the box and fire a shot goalwards that was spilt by the keeper. The follow up was slotted home to give SCBC a 1-0 lead. This would be the score taken into half time.

At half time the message of ‘belief in the process’ and pick up the speed and quality of what we do was reiterated. Changes were also made due to players having to play 90min the night before. These changes would add quality and speed to our game and take us to the next level.

The second half of the game was at another level and SCBC took the game to Butler. The Butler defence and GK were outstanding and were the only thing keeping Butler in the game at this stage. The chances were mounting, and it was only a matter of time before the second goal came, some more good play and a follow up brought the lead to 2-0. SCBC Maintained the intensity and were able to score a third and run out 3 – 0 winners and were crowned state champions of the senior boys for 2019.

We would like to say thank you to Butler college for the well-contested match and congratulate them on their successful season, also a massive thank you to SSWA and in particular Richard DeFraine and Joe Wright for organising the competition, a big thank you to the referees for officiating throughout the competition, a big thank you to SCBC and the staff for all the support and lastly a big thank you to the all the players in the squad for playing their part in this magnificent achievement.

Well done!
