Our Year 3 students recently had an exciting opportunity to actively participate in a SciTech forensic science incursion. They were able to put into practice their inquiry skills during the investigation of ‘Who Stole the Library Book?’. Working in small teams, the students investigated the laboratory evidence collected against different suspects – Dotty the dog, Candela the cat, Gerald the rabbit, and The Karate chicken.
The children used a variety of techniques including chromatography, pipetting, and paw print analysis. We were amazed at their forensic skills as they compared their evidence, evaluated samples, and made predictions. It was important for the students to distinguish between the circumstantial evidence and direct evidence to correctly identify the culprit.
If you require a forensic scientist to help you crack a case, Year 3 is full of experts!
