Due to continued growth in student enrolments, we have had numerous wonderful educators join our College in 2021. Over the course of this year’s newsletters, we will introduce some of these new members of our College community.
Mr Cornelius Smit – Head of Year 11 / Mathematics Teacher
Mr Smit was originally from Pretoria in South Africa and has lived in Australia for a number of years, relocating from Sydney to Perth at the beginning of 2021. He is a keen Mathematics educator who is also passionate about sports, particularly rugby. As well as teaching Math and coaching sports, Mr Smit will also be looking after the pastoral care needs of our Year 11 students this year.
He is a life-long learner who has achieved a number of qualifications, including a Bachelor of Commerce Law Degree; a graduate certificate in education; and Honours and Masters in Educational Management. Mr Smit explains that he chose to work in education because he is “…passionate about helping both students and staff grow in their skills and confidence as they look to fulfill their God given purpose in life.” He also says that he has loved his first weeks at South Coast, finding it to be a friendly community. He reports that staff and students have provided a warm welcome to Mr Smit and his wife, Mrs Zenia Smit, who has also joined the College this year as a Visual Arts teacher.
Ms Jacinta Ling – Education Assistant
Ms Ling joins us this year as an Education Assistant. With a background in Events Management, Ms Ling has a degree in Business Administration, as well as a Cert III in Disability and Cert IV in Education Support.
Ms Ling decided to transition to education due to her love of seeing young people flourish. She explains: “Over 40 years, my mother dedicated herself to teaching. When I go out with her now, someone will often greet her as “teacher”, and share how much they enjoyed school and benefited from their education. Many of these ex-students are parents – or even grandparents now! Stories of how my mother helped her students motivated my desire to enter education to help teach and nurture future generations.”
