This Term Pikanini 1 is formed by a team from different cultural backgrounds. Our strengths are working as a team, and we are blessed with the opportunities the Lord has provided us.
To begin our morning each day, we acknowledge the traditional landowners by saying.
HERE IS THE SKY
HERE IS THE LAND
HERE ARE MY FRIENDS, AND HERE AM I
WE THANK THE WHADJUK PEOPLE ON THE LAND ON WHICH WE PLAY AND LEARN.
We also have a devotion and sing worship songs.
The children have shown much interest in singing, and we have been singing songs with actions such as ‘Row Row’ and ‘Sleeping bunnies,’ which is their favourite, before transitioning the children to wash their hands. We sing songs repeatedly, which helps the children to repeat the words. We have been reading a story about ‘Dear Zoo’. This book has been read many times, and the children have shown much interest in the book.
We have been focusing on the children’s fine and gross motor skills for the past few weeks. The obstacle course has been set up in different ways, and we observe and see if they can balance, how they coordinate and focus on their movements as they follow the set-up of the obstacle course. Skilling the children to hold onto the doughnuts and take walks around the yard helps to keep the children together. From our last fire drill, the children did well when asked to hold the doughnuts and evacuate the building with the Educators directing them.
The past few months, we had a few events that we have been celebrating, such as Australia Day – the children were provided with activities such as spaghetti play, jelly and making fairy bread. For the Chinese New Year, the children did a painting with bright coloured paint and watched the ‘Lion dance.’
During Harmony Week, the children made handprints on a yellow cloth, and used colours to represent the Australian flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag. We listened to different cultural songs and entertained our children during morning tea with cultural dances. In the afternoon, parents and families were invited to join us for a picnic which they all enjoyed.
